The perfect Boot Camp

The key elements of any successful boot camp class include hard work, a variety of intense activities and a healthy does of camaraderie and togetherness with your fellow participants

What is a Boot Camp?

A boot camp is an inclusive, group-based training session which delivers an easy-to-follow workout plan for all in attendance to participate in and improve their overall fitness levels. The workouts themselves are a form of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) — bursts of intense activity alternated between intervals of lighter activity for optimal results.

There are many different bootcamps operating here in Ireland and the workouts at each can vary, depending on their main areas of focus.

They generally include an intense mix of core aerobic, strength training and speed elements within each group session, hosted a couple of times a week. Some boot camp workouts stress body weight exercises (calisthenics) while others may focus more on military-style drills (hence the name ‘boot camp’!).

At most group training sessions offered by gyms, fitness centres and specialist personal trainers, you can expect to be challenged with calisthenics — such as pull-ups, push-ups, squats, lunges, planks, crunches (sit-ups) and ‘burpees’, among other drills and short-distance sprinting.

Most boot camps offered within Dublin’s highly-competitive fitness industry include tailored resistance or strength training workouts.

Boot camp exercises also can include functional fitness, such as using whole-body, multi-joint exercises that simulate movements and improve your overall core strength flexibility, borrowing inspiration from traditional yoga and Pilates principles for a holistic, full-body workout.
